TOWNHALL MEETING WITH NBA ABUJA BRANCH ON RULE OF LAW AND CREDIBLE ELECTIONS PDF Print E-mail

The series of town hall meeting with various sectors of the society took of on the 19th of December 2006 with a meeting organized by the alliance in conjunction with the NBA Abuja Branch at the Bolton White Hotel. The meeting was well attended by legal practitioners within Abuja. The meeting had the following persons as speakers;



EMMA UGBOAJA – APPRAISING THE VOTERS REGISTRATION FROM ACE –                    

NIGERIA

EMMA EZEAZU – NON VIOLENT DEFENCE OF MANDATE

DR. OLUMIDE AYENI – RULE OF LAW AS BASIS OF FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS 

ABDUL IBRAHIM – NBA/ CIVIL SOCIETY ALLIANCE

At the end of the meeting the following resolutions were reached:

1. That in furtherance of the rule of law, civil society should strive to ensure that members of the society are properly registered well ahead of the general elections.



1. That the courts should in safe guarding their independence prosecute any member of the society who engages in electoral offences.



1. That the voter population should be mobilized to imbibe the cultural values of non violent defence of citizens’ mandate as demonstrated in other countries.



1. That the voter population should understand that sovereignty rests in the people and not in the state; and that violence is the last refuge of the weak.



1. That the INEC should aggressively discharge its constitutional duties and ensure that the civil society protects the mandate by acting as monitors at elections.



1. That the Nigerian Bar Association should as a major stakeholder in the body polity of the federal republic of Nigeria be proactive and defend the people’s power by building alliances around credible elections and monitor elections results there by reducing the issue of election rigging.
