The Electoral Act must set very clear benchmarks for internal democracy in the political parties. The unwholesome role of godfathers should be checked by rules that insist on membership participation in the development of the party. Measures should be put in place to enhance the role of citizens, especially women, in the democratic functioning of the parties. “Carry go” elections in party primaries must be abolished |

The Summit resolved that the civil society should be strengthened towards developing networks, synergies and mobilization strategies to give expression to progressive recommendations of the National Electoral Reform Committee. It was agreed that Civil society should build a strong movement for the restoration of popular sovereignty through an aggressive campaign for electoral reform, empower the people to understand the issues involved in electoral reforms and building peoples’ power to confront anti-democratic elements. |

The electoral system of Nigeria is in bad shape because the right of the citizens to elect public leaders of their choice is usually undermined. A situation where results are declared in constituencies where voters never sighted voting cards and where voting cards without numbers were issued to voters on Election Day constitutes the lowest level of any electoral system. |

The one day consultative meeting with PMAN was organized with the purpose of harvesting the views of the members of the organization on the current discuss on electoral reform process. Participants at the meeting were drawn from the leadership of PMAN in Lagos and Governors of PMAN from 6 states of the federation namely Delta, Niger, Kwara, Bayelsa, Rivers and Kogi State. Four resources persons delivered papers at the meeting. |
